From My Cold Dead (and Sticky) Hands

"Hey kid, you'll put that sign down if you know what's good for you..."

As the summer of 2014 inches inexorably towards fall, children across America have one more reason to dread returning to their local 'Temple of Pure Thought'...  The Great American Bake Sale, the lone redeeming feature of the US Educational System, like so much else we knew (and in my case, 'LOVED') in elementary / high school is under attack.

But don't be alarmed, it's for the good of the children.

August 1, 2014 Wall Street Journal Online:  Put Down the Cupcake: New Ban Hits School Bake Sales
.
Campus bake sales—a mainstay of school fundraisers—are going on a diet. A federal law that aims to curb childhood obesity means that, in dozens of states, bake sales must adhere to nutrition requirements that could replace cupcakes and brownies with fruit cups and granola bars.
.
...
.
The restrictions that took effect in July stem from the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act championed by first lady Michelle Obama and her "Let's Move!" campaign. The law overhauled nutrition standards affecting more than 30 million children.
.
...
.
The law also required the U.S. Department of Agriculture to set standards for all food and beverages sold during the school day, which includes vending machines, snack carts and daytime fundraisers. It allowed for "infrequent" fundraisers, and states were allowed to decide how many bake sales they would have that didn't meet nutrition standards.
.

Without state-approved exemptions, any treats sold would have to meet calorie, sodium, fat and other requirements. The law permits states to fine schools that don't comply.

.

Tennessee will allow schools to sell food items that tip the federal scales for 30 days each year.

.

"Schools have relied on these types of sales as revenue streams for sports, cheering clubs, marching bands," said David Sevier, deputy executive director of the Tennessee Board of Education. "We get the obesity issue, but we don't want to jerk this out from under the kids."

.

In advance of the law, some schools had already banned students from a near-sacred activity: setting up tables to sell boxes of Girl Scout cookies during the day. There are also those that have replaced food-centric fundraisers with calorie-free events such as wrapping-paper sales, pie-throwing events and bowl-a-thons. Others have prohibited homemade fare in favor of processed items where the nutritional information is calculated and displayed.

.

...

.

"Some don't follow the spirit and set up bake sales right after the bell rings," said Christine Jovanovic, of Austin, who is a member of the parent-teacher association at Canyon Vista Middle School and Westwood High School.

.

The result of the new requirements may be more processed-food products.

.

"We use prepackaged food because it has to have nutritional requirements posted," said Keli Gill, president-elect of the Arkansas PTA, where the state has had nutrition standards for bake sales for a few years. "Items like apples are perishable and don't last as long, so we don't want to waste money and have it go bad on us."

.
Yes, your Federal Government is looking out for your kids, because it (the Federal Government) loves them so much more than you do...
.
A couple of questions spring to mind.  Questions for which I would really appreciate some answers from Michelle Obama and the Federal Government in general:
 .
  1. Schools have replaced bake sales with 'non-food-centric-events' such as Pie Tossing (last time I looked, I'm pretty sure that a PIE was 'some sort of food'), wrapping paper sales (Oops, wouldn't some wrapping paper feature a 'Jolly Old Elf' celebrating Christmas?!?!  Since when does the Federal Government support religious events?) and 'Bowl-A-Thons' (quick question, has anyone ELSE been to a bowling alley lately?  Don't they serve alcohol to overweight, slovenly adults AND sell extremely unhealthy food from that grease-laden snack bar they've got set up there?  So it's okay to put kids in an environment where people are drinking AND eating junk food at a school-sponsored event, just so long as you don't do it on school property?  What's up next, Sex Education classes taught by 'professionals' in stiletto heels, tear-away clothing, and women (and men?) sporting 'safe-sex-themed'...  'Tramp Stamps'?)
  2. Bake sales are OKAY, as long as they happen after school hours?  Calories do not COUNT after the bell rings?  Knowing this, I'll be installing a portable bell at my dinner table and ring it just before jumping into the Apple Pie a la mode.
  3. The legislation may result in more 'Pre-Packaged Food' being sold at school?  Yes, why would you want freshly-baked goods when you can purchase something which was belched out of a factory conveyor line roughly 22 months ago?  So it's more important to buy food with a Federally-recognized 'label' (and BONUS! chocked full of preservatives), than it is to buy something which was flour, eggs, and sugar yesterday in some Mom or Dad's home kitchen?  So Twinkies (with a shelf-life of the half life of Plutonium) are preferable to my Mom's brownies?  Thanks, but, um, no thanks.
  4. Items which are perishable (like apples) are a waste of money because they don't last 'long enough to sell'?  Hey lady, it's a BAKE SALE, not a freaking FARM STAND!  If a kid WANTS an apple, they can get it courtesy of the First Lady's horrific school lunch program - cut these kids a break and let them buy something BAKED in the oven if they choose to.  If kids are not smart enough to eat well, perhaps their parents (which you people educated) aren't smart enough to have kids in the first place).  Come to think of it, this explains...  A lot.
.
Okay, here's the deal, I know there's a lot going on in the World lately.  I also know that 'Banning Bake Sales' is NOT the end of the World.  But I know that whenever Freedom is taken away ('bite-by-small-bite') the World which I knew growing up...  Will never be quite the same.
.
One last question for you before I need to get out to work:  How does eliminating Bake Sales which raise money for school Marching Bands, Soccer Teams, Baseball Teams, and other after school activities make kids healthier?  Each extra-curricular event encourages kids to be involved with other kids, keeps them motivated, keeps them moving, and, unless I'm missing something, keeps them healthier than if they were sitting at home eating a bag of 22-month old Doritos while watching YouTube videos of idiots on skateboards.
.
Without the external funding (from bake sales and other fund raisers), these programs are diminished, AND without additional financial support will...  Die.
 .
So either one of two things are happening:
 .
  1. Michelle Obama's 'Let's Move' Campaign is just another means to and end in increasing demands on state and federal government, or,
  2. It is merely a means of teaching 'your kids' to 'comply' with whatever onerous legislation is passed for 'their kids' (the worst-case scenario, is, of course, that the intended result of this legislation is meant to cause both)
.
Like I said before, Freedom doesn't disappear in a single bite, it's gnawed away while you're looking elsewhere.  You know, like when you're watching a flagging Economy, seeing more than 50% of the US population on Federal Support, the Immigration debacle, Russia's annexation of the Ukraine, or perhaps if you're looking to a far-away country where our Vacationer-In-Chief left an unprepared people to fend for themselves and is now investing resources to a job which he left unfinished in the first place.
 .
Never lose sight of the bigger (and smaller) pictures, for they all tell a similar story.  The only question remaining, of course, is...
 .
How will the story end?
 .
.

Federally-Mandated Sticks and Twigs

We're so sorry, Nephew Albert,
But we haven't cooked a bloody thing all day.
We're so sorry, Nephew Albert,
But the kettle's on the boil and we're so easily called away...
-- "Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey" by Paul McCartney

Yes.  I did it.  I changed up a few words in the lyrics above.

I'm soooo sorry, Uncle Albert...

This is one of my favorite songs of all time as it reminds me of the kid I 'used to be'.  It reminds me of the summer of 1971 when I, and hundreds of other fellow Boy Scouts spent a summer week camping on Gardiner's Island.

During July, 1971, it seemed that the only song on my battery-powered AM radio WAS this song.  Camping, roughing it, while "Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey" was pumping out of my little AM radio plastic speaker several dozen times a day - yeah, it was 'mostly' all good.

Ah, but then there were the 'buffaloes'...  Um, not so good.

You'll see.

We filled our canteens from these huge green military 'water buffaloes' which, sitting in the summer sun, kept the water hot enough to make 'hot' tea.  The water had a metallic 'twang' to it and we Scouts speculated that if we were able to ever open up one of these buffaloes we'd find it full of water, scrap metal, car radiators, and rusting tin cans.  It was probably best that we never figured out how to open the thing up...  Some nights I still dream of opening the spigot at and a class ring clinking onto the rocks through the open tap.  Then, of course, I smell the whiff of decay, a human finger momentarily blocks the spigot and then...

[Note to self:  Stop reading Stephen King]

Oops, sorry.

We also received rations of dehydrated food to prepare at our campsite under the large WWII era dining fly.  The food wasn't very good, it was ALL dehydrated (which was good since the water was 'almost' boiling when retrieved from the Troop's Water Buffalo).  I also remember there was not a lot of food for we 'swarthy Scouts' to dine upon by our open campfire.  On Tuesday evening I spilled an entire plate of "Chicken a' La-trine" onto the ground by the edge of the fire pit and during the evening and morning which followed - no critters came to eat it.  When wildlife doesn't eat your spilled food at camp - perhaps you shouldn't eat it either?

All things considered, however, I'd trade a good week at work for a bad week at that particular summer camp any day.  Bad food, or not.

Enough of 1971, for I must fast-forward you (literally) to 2013 to another hot summer, some other kids, and additional bad food choices dictated for some by 'others'.

However, in this current-day version of summer, no Scout uniforms are visible,  the water buffaloes are in Afghanistan, and the music on the radio and iPods, well, let's just say, "It ain't good like it used to be...".

Seems like nothing is 'good like it used to be'...

Ah, but maybe that's just me being gloomy on this warm, sticky Wednesday.

ENOUGH OF THIS GLOOMINESS - HEY IT'S 2013!!!

Let's party like it's 1984!!!

LET'S MOOOOOOO-VE (INTO THE FUTURE)!!!
(Please bear with me as I now have a Disco-Funk Riff running through my head...  I'll be back in a moment)

Ah, that's better!  Here we go!

WashingtonTimes.com, July 9, 2013:    New York school drops Michelle Obama lunch standards: Kids too hungry

New York's Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake school district has become the latest casualty in first lady Michelle Obama’s preferred lunch plan, dropping the menu after too many students complained of hunger.

“[Food service manager Nicky] Boehm and her staff worked hard to implement the new regulations, but there were just too many problems and too many foods that students did not like and would not purchase,” said Assistant Superintendent Chris Abdoo about the National School Lunch Program in a statement reported by EAGNews.org. “Students complained of being hungry with these lunches and the district lost money.”

The school system decided to instead create its own lunch menu for next year.

The district lost about $100,000 trying out the federal menu, which offered such meals as “part” of a chicken patty on a minicroissant, EAGNews.org reported.

“Students felt they weren’t getting good value for their money,” Ms. Boehm said in EAGNews.org. “The high schoolers especially complained the portion sizes were too small and many more students brought in lunch from home.”

This isn’t the first school to drop the federal lunch menu plan. Catlin, Ill., schools did the same, calling the guidelines too “restrictive,” EAGNews.org reported.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is in charge of managing the lunch program and estimates Mrs. Obama’s new wish list for student meals would cost about $3.2 billion to bring to fruition around the nation.

Can you imagine a New York School District saying "NO" to Michelle Obama?  My my, what is this world coming to?  Who knew that New York Schools were so, so, "Racist"?

When I began digging around for 'stuff' to include in this post, I never realized that there was a federal website called choosemyplate.gov.  In reality, I don't know WHY I didn't realize that this site would exist - as for the past five+ years the government has its sticky little fingers pretty much in everything I look at / into.  I should have KNOWN.

Surprisingly enough however, there is NO www.choosemyhealthcare.gov (yet) - I'm assuming this is because in the future you'll have no choice about your health care as the Exchanges will be the place your employer sends you to 'get insurance' since you won't be getting it through your job whenever ObamaCare is ready for prime time.

Wanting to give it the old 'college try' I searched for the choosemyhealthcare.gov site and the first search result which came up was this one...

..............................................................................
Obamacare Health Quotes
Health Insurance starting at $1 per day from top companies.

..............................................................................

Yeah, how do you like me now?

Rejoining our post (already in progress!), the school district in New York State LOST $100,000 because students didn't want to eat the 'Sticks and Twigs' mandated by Michelle Obama's stringent dietary guidelines.

In fact, many students went back to bringing their lunches from HOME.  Sheesh, we can't have THAT happen (you know, people providing for each other because they feel responsible FOR each other - because they are a FAMILY).

The government, as any rational persons KNOWS, must not have people depending upon their family because this represents a LOSS of responsibility for the government.  And, if responsibilities are stripped from the government, well, it might just need to get SMALLER, spending might be reduced, vital services (Obama Phones) might be discontinued, people would once again begin looking for work and no one wants that, do they?

NO!  That's crazy talk!

Yeah, I guess that I AM feeling a bit gloomy today.  Sorry.

I'll leave you with this fragile thread of logic:

  • When the government does not trust you enough to feed your own children?  Perhaps the education given to you by the government in schools is 'lacking'?
  • If the education given to you by the government is 'lacking' perhaps we need to re-think the education system?
  • If we re-think the entire education system, perhaps we need to look at alternative teaching options such as Charter Schools, Private Schools, Religious Schools?
  • And if we look at alternative teaching options, shouldn't we fund them using State / Federal monies since, according to Michelle Obama, people graduating from schools are too stupid to know what to eat and how to feed themselves?

Just for giggles, you saw the choosemyplate.gov 'Official Artwork' above, someone (not me) took a few liberties with it to make it a bit more realistic (for one Presidential family at least)...

Yes, I thought it was funny.

Humor is firmly rooted in truth.

The Obamas no longer allow themselves to be photographed whilst they are 'Dining'.  I wonder why that is?

Perhaps it's because they are NOT eating anything remotely looking like this?

Lastly, since Michelle went on SesameStreet to sell her sticks and twigs to the children of the Nation, I close today's post with Cookie Monster's 'Official Rebuttal Statement' to the First Lady's "Let's Move" program...

Have a nice day folks...

Enjoy the remaining years of Michelle Obama's 'helpful national projects'.

Let's Moo-ve!

Image:  Newsweek Magazine

BREAKING NEWS:  February 20, 3:23pm

Reported by the WeeklyStandard.com site - "White House Credits 'Let's Move' for Halting and Reversing Childhood Obesity Trend"

Today the White House credited Michelle Obama's three-year-old “Let's Move” initiative with halting and even reversing a thirty year trend of increasing childhood obesity, a trend that has led to what the Centers for Disease Control has called an epidemic.

A press release from the Office of the First Lady announced details of a "two day nationwide tour" at the end of the month to celebrate the third anniversary of the program that promotes exercise and healthy eating habits to young people.

Michelle was so delighted with her efforts that The White House's "Office of the First Lady" issued a press release.  No, I'm not making this up.  There is apparently an "Office of the First Lady".

Seriously, STOP laughing - I am NOT kidding.

Check this out:

Yes, the First Lady of the United States is going on a three-day Nationwide Tour beginning February 22nd, 2013 to celebrate her personal success...

Success in taking food out of...  Little children's mouths.

Sorry Billy.

The First Lady's upcoming itinerary includes 'really important places to go' to celebrate her work on behalf of 'making American children hungry':

February 22nd, 2013 -  "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon", "Good Morning America" with Robin Roberts (to be broadcast on February 26th), and the "Dr. Oz" show, joined by Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan for a segment to air on February 28th.

They're going to make a MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT about bringing physical activity back into schools.  (Hey kids, remember when you're parents told you that THEY had to walk two miles uphill (both ways) in a foot of snow to school every day?  Guess what?  It's your turn!  Because it'll save gas, save the planet, and work off any 'remaining' paunch you have now that Mrs. O. has turned your Beefy Burritos into a nice, filling, Quinoa and Tofu salad!  Yumm-O!)

February 27th, 2013 -  Hey, speaking of Yumm-O!...

Let's go to the actual press release for this one:  "First Lady Michelle Obama will join TV personality and child nutrition advocate Rachael Ray to highlight the new healthy school lunches that are now being served across the nation. Thanks to the bi-partisan Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, championed by Mrs. Obama and Ray, and signed into law by the President in 2010, the 32 million students who eat lunch provided by their school are now seeing more fruits, vegetables, low-fat or fat-free milk varieties, and whole grains; less saturated fat, trans fat, and sodium; and proper portion size on their lunch trays."

To assure the safety of the Rachel Ray, Michelle Obama, and the film crew, no students will be on hand for this event.  According to one anonymous White House staff member, "We were originally going to have the children involved, but many of them were weak, others appeared to be extremely violent, and a few others kept nodding off as we attempted to film them during the course of their normal routine.

Many of them had this sort of weird 'look' in their eyes...  We were happy to get out of the Elementary School alive!  Those kids looked, well they looked really MEAN and HUNGRY.  If you ever merged the DNA from the mutant-hill-dwelling characters from the original "The Hills Have Eyes" film with those brain-chomping zombies from the "The Walking Dead" TV series - yeah, it was a lot like that.  We threw them some raw steak (and hobbled a Republican to slow the kids down) and we ran back to the Obama Bus - it was really scary..."

[Okay, so I made that last quote up, but it doesn't mean it DIDN'T happen, now does it?]

February 28, 2013 - First Lady Michelle Obama will return to her hometown of Chicago to make a major announcement to bring physical activity back to schools.

The First Lady will be joined by Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, NIKE, Inc. President & CEO Mark Parker, Dominique Dawes, Gabby Douglas, Allyson Felix, Bob Harper, Bo Jackson, Colin Kaepernick, Sarah Reinertsen, Paul Rodriguez, Serena Williams, a surprise musical guest ["Weird Al" performing, 'FAT' live?] and thousands of Chicago area teachers and students at the event hosted by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.

In an effort to showcase the benefits of daily excercise, school children between the ages of 7 and 14 will be released into the streets of Chicago.  Then, at exactly 1:18pm a mock gun battle between the Crypts and the Bloods will erupt (including actual Assault Weapons provided by the Department of Justice!) - we'll see who the quick kids are...  They'll be the ones who return for the 2:00pm Quinoa Quiche Buffet.  The other children will learn the hard way that being overweight in Chicago...  Can KILL.

Just another valuable life-lesson provided by your Democratic Party!

[Yeah, I did it again.  Why?  Because Conservatives have been accused by Democrats and Liberals of wanting to kill the sick, the young and the elderly for years.  The irony, of course, is that the Party of the President is all for abortion, assisted suicide, Obama Care Death Panels and is for putting light bulbs into your homes, which have high levels of 'mercury' (which, by the way, CAN kill you).  So, I guess, I'm not sorry at all with my brief writing excercise above.]

There are additional upcoming dates of course, you can read about them HERE if you like.  Frankly, I'm done following the First Lady around on her "Yeah, I did that" Tour, 2013.

I would, however like to end with the following...

Two questions spring to mind:

First, can the First Lady take credit for the fractional decrease in the weight of school-aged kids?

Second, can the President of the United States personally take ALL the credit for accomplishing this worth-while goal?

If you ask me, the second alternative is the more-likely than the first.

Why?

Bluntly stated, there are more school-aged children living in poverty than there were four years ago.

From the Huffington Post: "After climbing four years in a row, the U.S. child-poverty rate essentially held firm in 2011, the U.S. Census Bureau announced on Wednesday. In 2010, the child-poverty rate peaked at 22 percent. In 2011, census officials found that 21.9 percent of American children are living below the poverty line. The overall poverty rate held steady as well. According to the Census, 46.2 million people, or 15 percent of the population, live in poverty."

With almost 22 % of American Kids living in homes with incomes below the poverty line, I guess fewer parents can afford the Cheesy Poofs made famous by the South Park Kids?

In fact, could we not credit the President with this weight loss, instead of his wife?

I know a lot of folks who are eating at home and no longer going out to eat since the Summer of Recovery began in 2010.

Yes, it's been a very, very, long summer...  And according to the MoosRoom's resident Groundhound, it appears that now we're in for four years of a National Double-Dip Recession winter.  (One dip down, another on the way!)

Photo:  AP
"Yeah, a little more to the Left - Super!"

Well, winter, of course, unless you get your own private jet, multiple vacations, and private lessons with professional golfers in warmer climes while your wife takes the girls skiing...

Maybe Recovery Summer did actually begin in 2010 and everyone except the President, Joe Biden, and Congress missed it?

"Unable to overcome the shame of the 'Bunny Ears', Bo Obama took his own life
by breaking and eating 17 CFL bulbs from the President's Oval Office..."

And, as an aside, has anyone seen 'Bo' lately?  I'm worried about that dog.
